Home & Personal Safety Seminar

 

On Thursday, (6/17) residents of Barker Lake and Riata Ranch had the opportunity to hear Deputy Rick Guajardo present his Home & Personal Safety Seminar.

 

Deputy Guajardo is one of 3 officers that MUD #196 has contracts with, and we do appreciate all they do for us.

 

With the very positive attendance he had, he felt sure another seminar would be planned in the near future.  Maybe even with pictures!

SHRUBS AND BUSHES

 

  1. Keep bushes trimmed for consistent shape, which will make it easier to detect motion near windows.
  2. Trim bushes at least 9" from the ground up and trees 6' up.

 

LOCKS AND DOORS

 

  1. Consider investing in good locks, preferably dead bolts with a 1" throw.
  2. if you have a door with a glass insert or window nearby, use a keyed dead bolt.
  3. Use a one way peephole with solid doors.

 

WINDOWS

 

  1. Are there locks on your windows?
  2. Window latches are not locks
  3. Windows are often entry points for criminals, even on the second floor
  4. Use your alarm, even if your at home.

 

A KNOCK AT THE DOOR

 

  1. Do not open the door before checking to see who it is.
  2. Check through peephole and yell "Who is it?!"

 

LIGHTING

 

  1. Inexpensive way to secure your home.
  2. Good outdoor lighting will deter crime greatly
  3. Lighting around doors and corners are important.
  4. Motion detectors for outside lighting is highly recommended.
